Official rules are long and boring, I know. But skipping them is how people enter something they were never eligible to win. The good news is you only need about five things, and they're easy to find.
1. Who can enter
Look for "Eligibility." Check the minimum age (18 or 21 usually) and the states. A lot of sweepstakes leave out a state or two, and some are only open to a single state.
2. When it starts and ends
Look for "Promotion Period" or "Entry Period." Note the time zone. 11:59pm Eastern is 8:59pm in California.
3. How often you can enter
Once total? Once a day? Once a week? This is the one that matters most for your odds. Also check whether "daily" means per calendar day or every 24 hours. If you're new to these, see entry types explained.
4. What you could win
Look for "Prizes" and the ARV (approximate retail value). That's also the number you'd pay tax on. See how sweepstakes taxes work.
5. How winners are picked and contacted
Random drawing? Judged? When? And the big one: how long you have to respond. Some give you 48 hours. Miss it and they pick someone else.
Things you can skip
Release of liability, privacy, governing law, disputes. Important if you win, not something you need to read every time.
